OUGD501 - End of Module Evaluation

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Screen printing has obviously been the main skill I have developed through this module through research and experimenting first hand in the print room. I am really glad I took the opportunity to experiment with different techniques before finalising any ideas as this really informed the concept that I built. The technical printing skills that I developed will hopefully be beneficial in the future as printing is a key interest of mine within graphic design and I plan to work with this a lot in third year.

When we first had the session on triangulation I was quite confused and thought that I would really struggle with it but after completing the initial set task I felt a lot more confident in applying this to my essay. Although I feel it could still be improved I feel this is another very useful skill I have definitely developed through the module that will be beneficial next year.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

Screen print was obviously the main design production method that I developed through this module and this was an integral part of the concept.

The production method really impacted on how I designed the pack as I couldn't visualise the marble effect and how this would look digitally, so I tried to use colour and other ways to represent this on screen to assist the design process. However, I feel that this struggle actually indicates how much we rely on technology now which is almost a link in itself to my essay. Despite this I am really pleased with the final product and I am especially pleased with the marble effect in terms of the aesthetic that it provides but also its relevance to the concept and purpose of the pack, with it being reliant on human involvement and being different/unique each time.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

The biggest strength within the module I feel has been my concept development as I feel that I successfully interpreted points made within my essay and translated these into a visually and conceptually relevant designed product for a specific target audience. I am pleased with how I considered audience and how the audience was related to the issues raised in my essay.

The screen-print testing I carried out is another strength as not only did this improve my skills before I printed the final product it also really informed the method I used for the final product, ensuring it was relevant.

I am also really pleased with the question I chose to answer with my essay as through picking a subject that wasn't as directly covered in the lectures as other potential subjects I could have looked at, I feel I have improved my research skills in addition to gaining a better understanding and knowledge of a subject that is of particular interest to me and my practice as a designer. This also lead to a practical element that benefited me as a designer as it allowed me to develop in an area of specific interest.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

There are some areas of my essay I wish I had time to revisit, such as adding more sources to improve my triangulation as Richard told me this would improve my essay. I really enjoyed writing my essay and learning about the subject and so I am disappointed I didn't find the time to make it the best it could be.

I would really liked to have added more to my practical element as I designed the pack as almost part of a campaign aimed at digital natives to make them aware of print in this very digital world, and I had thought about screen printing posters for high schools which I still think would have added to the campaign and reached a wider audience.

Packaging is an area that I have little experience in and isn't a particular interest of mine. This combined with my weaker crafting skills mean that it isn't a surprise that my box is I feel the weakest part of my final product. I am extremely disappointed that I couldn't find any suitable brown card in time as I think this would have improved the box largely, I really dislike the amount of white on the box but this wasn't my plan and again this came down to time management. In addition to this I don't feel I developed the net enough and so it is not the strongest or easiest to get into. I really wish the box was more sturdy for the post and also more in keeping with the rest of the products in terms of design as it is quite plain.

My main weakness has definitely been my time planning as due to focussing on other modules I didn't start thinking about the practical element of this module until quite late, and as a result I didn't get to finish things to the best of my ability which is disappointing. I will definitely keep on top of the CoP 3 module after this experience.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

I would definitely start my practical piece earlier if I was to re-do the module. Although I started to think of ideas and researching further plenty of time before the deadline, I left it way too late to start the design process and as a result I feel many of my decisions were rushed and could have been improved.

I would also have liked to have added more to the practical element of the module as the pack is designed to be a part of a campaign and I had thought about producing posters to be put up in high schools around Yorkshire, however due to time restraints this was not possible.

One of the major things I would have done differently is plan my time more efficiently. This links to both the previous points made as if I had planned my time from an earlier stage I would have been able to add more elements to the practical element, as I would hopefully have started the practical sooner than I did. This would also have allowed me more time to revisit my essay as I know Richard told me that if I could find a couple more sources then the essay could be 'excellent', I am really dissapointed that I didn't make time for this as I really enjoyed writing the essay and wanted it to be the best it could be, but again my time management let me down and I didn't have time for this.

My crafting skills are definitely one of my weakest and need improving. This is something that I feel often lets my final products down and so is something I know I need to work in future.

I think it would have been beneficial to have arranged a crit with my peers at some stage through the practical element of the module, however I was under the impression we had scheduled crits which is why I held out on this. Looking back however I think I should have used my initiative and arranged a crit, perhaps at the concept stage.
